Most of our titles are available as ebooks on Kindle, Google Play, Kobo etc. Our international titles are available as audiobooks on platforms like Audible etc. Hachette India as of now does not produce/publish audiobooks as they are taxable product.
We are a trade publisher (or a publisher of general interests books meant for the lay reader). We do not publish academic, professional, science/technology/medicine books. We also do not publish magazines or journals.
We have three publishing divisions: Adult & Business Books (A&B); Children’s & Young Adult (C&YA); and Reference & Limca Book of Records (Ref & LBR).
No, we do not have a self-publishing division, and do not publish books for payment (vanity publishing). Our philosophy as a trade publisher is in fact based on the reverse where an editorial team curates lists they choose to build, and all costs are borne by us as the publishers. Every book we publish goes through the editorial process that is independent (which is by definition subjective).
After acceptance by editorial there may be projects where we accept grants (for colour or high production spec books such as children’s picture books) and that is acknowledged within the book.
Of the three divisions listed above, the A&B division does not accept direct publishing proposals anymore; and prefers having submissions routed through an agent.
For any information on our publishing process and how to submit your work for consideration, please visit our Submissions page.
That’s right. From 2017 Hachette India has been the curator and publisher of the Limca Book of Records (LBR). All details pertaining to LBR can be found here.
Generally, no. We have a stringent QC process in place. But in a business of scale (millions of copies are printed every year), it is possible that a few copies may end up having print smudges or in the binding process a forme (a set of pages) is misbound. In such cases where the copies purchased are clearly defective, you can get a return/replacement from the store you bought it from. However, it is important to be aware of two key factors:
Subjectivity: The paper we use is generally natural shade which is off-white. That’s the paper generally used worldwide in trade publishing rather than the bright white of educational books (as generally prevalent in India). So here there will be no replacements available for what is effectively a subjective choice as regards brightness or whiteness.
Genuine copies: With piracy rampant, please be sure that the copy you have bought is an original one. Pirated copies will not be replaced. There are clear identifiers of piracy. Please see our anti-piracy alert.
Yes, one edition can differ from another in subsequent printings where specifications are concerned – though not in reading content. The text will be the same. The first edition may have finishes (lamination, emboss, etc.) that are not there in the subsequent printings because the book has moved from offset printing to short run digital printing. Often after the first few printings the demand may not be enough to sustain an offset printing. Today rather than declare the book out of print, it is still kept in circulation through the means of digital printing which however is a much more expensive process.
This shift to digital printing happens to maintain optimum inventory, and to prevent waste, while keeping books in print. Likewise in digital printings colour plate sections may change to single colour on text paper because of the print process and the necessity of keeping the book affordable.
This does not apply of course to full colour books like high end visual books or colour children’s picture books.
In line with global Hachette policy, Hachette India only uses responsibly sourced and sustainable paper, as is confirmed on every printed book. Please be sure that you get a genuine product. Say No to piracy.
When the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) certifies that a paper is made of responsibly sourced wood fibre, that paper earns the FSC label or certification. FSC certification is an important standard for the books industry. It indicates that the forests from which wood fibrewas harvested are managed in a way that reduces their environmental impact.
The FSC standard ensures landowners and wood products manufacturers use responsible forestry practices that:
