Pippa's Painting

Jill Atkins

Anni Axworthy

Pippa is busy making a painting but her little brother wants to see! They soon get in a mess with all the paints!

The Tiddlers series features fun stories with a word count of fewer than 50 words for children who are just starting to read.

A word list at the beginning of the story allows for a quick check of the  reader's ability to read and understand words before reading, and a puzzle at the end of the story encourages rereading for pleasure.

Jill Atkins

I am Jill Atkins, an escaped teacher, now writing for children with 46 books published so far, ranging from early reading material to teenage novels. I'm married with two grown-up children and five grandchildren, no pets, though I used to have three beautiful cats, guinea pigs and rabbits. When I was a child, we kept chickens and I loved them, too. I always have my nose in a book. I read both adult's and children's books. My favourite children's books include The Railway Children by E Nesbit, Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson, River on the Say by Philippa Pearce. My adult reading varies from Charles Dickens to many modern authors. I enjoy listening to music, classical, jazz and some pop.

Susan was born in Grimsby and was mad on Science Fiction and American Literature as a youngster. Her mother was a tailor and her father a professional guitar player. It is from her father that Susan acquired her love of live music! After studying English and American Literature at Warwick University, Susan had a variety of unusual jobs, including working on a mushroom farm, before teaching in England and Africa for ten years. She finally found herself writing children`s books and has an impressive list of publications to her name.

Susan is an award-winning author, having won the Sheffield Book Award for Beware the Killer Coat (Walker Books) of which Michael Rosen praised, "A funny book, hilarious!". Humanzee (Oxford University Press) was commended for the Carnegie Medal and short-listed for the Guardian Children`s Fiction Award. Raider was highly commended for the Carnegie Medal.

Susan lives in County Durham and is married with three children. When she is not at a gig, or walking along the Northumberland coastal paths, she can be found enjoying a glass of wine in her garden!
