The Mystery of a Hansom Cab

Fergus Hume

Murder on the move

An unidentified man gets into a cab, which immediately sets off toward its destination. When it arrives, however, the cab driver discovers the man to be dead. With nothing to identify the victim, and nothing to hint at who killed him or why, the mystery seems unsolvable.

The man has a strange note in his pocket and two rival detectives Gorby and Kislip compete to solve the mystery. But can they… when they don’t even know who the victim is?

First published in 1886, The Mystery of a Hansom Cab was an overnight sensation, selling hundreds of thousands of copies around the world and being translated into eleven languages.

Fergus Hume

Ferguson Wright Hume known as Fergus Hume, was a prolific English novelist, known for his detective fiction, thrillers and mysteries.

Hume first came to attention after a play he had written, entitled The Bigamist was stolen by a rogue called Calthorpe, and presented by him as his own work under the title The Mormon. Finding that the novels of Émile Gaboriau were then very popular in Melbourne, Hume obtained and read a set of them and determined to write a novel of the same kind. The result was The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, set in Melbourne, with descriptions of poor urban life based on his knowledge of Little Bourke Street. It was self-published in 1886 and became a great success.

Except for short trips to France, Switzerland and Italy, in 1888 Hume settled and stayed in Essex, England where he would remain for the rest of his life. Although he was born and lived the latter part of this life in England, he thought of himself as 'a colonial' and identified as a New Zealander, having spent all of his formative years from preschool through to adulthood there. Hume died of cardiac failure at his home on 11 July 1932.
