The Egg and I

Betty MacDonald

p>A hilarious tale of adjusting to country life, The Egg and I is Betty MacDonald's debut memoir that charts her life on a chicken farm. From meeting odd characters, adjusting to the hardships of farm life, caring for the animals (including the 'suicidal' chickens), and learning the tricks of the trade, the MacDonalds underline the experience with humour. Completely inexperienced and unprepared, Betty's life feels relatable as she goes through the trials and tribulations of change, a new social dynamic, and adapting to a new life, even though the story is set almost half a century ago.

With over three million copies sold, and translations in more than 32 languages, her story resonates strongly and the humour brings it alive.

It shows the importance of approaching hardships with humour and the significance of family.
